Transcript of obituary:

James Homer Jordan, Sr., 81, a first National Bank director and formerly cashier died at 2:30pm Thursday in Shannon Hospital.  Funeral will be held at 2pm Saturday at the Johnson Street Church of Christ with Stanley Lockhart, minister, officiating.  Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery directed by Johnson's Funeral Home.

Mr. Jordan liked to recall that he talked the late George E. Webb, then president of the bank, into giving him a trial.  That worked and he was associated with the bank 49 years, being vice president, cashier, and director before he retired in January 1961.  He continued as inactive vice president and director.  He was too ill to attend the January meeting of directors.

Mr. Jordan was born April 26, 1883, in Middleton, Tenn.  He was a year old when his family moved to Leonard in Fannin County, Tex.  After high school there, he attended Hill's Business College in Wave.  He came here in 1904.

In the bank here he took professional courses in the American Institute of Banking and headed the San Angelo chapter which he helped to found.  He also helped in organizing chapters at Lubbock and Amarillo.

He managed a cotton gin and traded in cotton at Bailey before coming to San Angelo.  His first work here was keeping books for J.B. Taylor Grocery Co.

When he applied for a position with the bank, Mr. Webb required written applications.  Another job seeker had misspelled a word.  When Mr. Webb rejected that application, he accepted the Jordan request because he and others in the bank knew the applicant.  Mr. Jordan once related he might have made an error in spelling had the bank insisted on checking him.  That stepping stone to success carried pay of $60 per month.

He held every post in the bank during his tenure except that of collector and president.

He was active in numerous civic projects here throughout his career, being president of the Lions Club at the time it was forming numerous clubs throughout the area.  He was president at the time the international organization recognized missionary effort in forming 13 area clubs during one year, receiving the international banner at Des Moines, Iowa.

He also served as president of the Board of City Development and as chancellor commander of the Knights of Pythias.  He was a member of the Johnson Street Church of Christ.  He formerly was chairman of the board and elder in the church.

Mr. Jordan was married to Myrtle Sinclair, May 5, 1908, in San Angelo.  She died in early August 1955.  Mr. Jordan was married then to Mrs. Gladys M. Roberts in July of 1957.

Surviving are his wife and five children by his first marriage.  These are James W., Jack G., and J. Homer Jordan Jr., all of San Angelo, Paul C Jordan of Dallas, and Mrs. W.R. Benson of San Saba:  11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be made to a favorite charity or to Johnson Street Church of Christ library.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Wilson, Hunter Cherry, R.C. Crabb, Ed Blanton, Curry Ducote, Chester Kenley, Charles Rose, and Clem Clutter, all of San Angelo.

The Descendants of John T. Jordan & Martha Jane Macon

This article describes the descendants of John T Jordan, the great-grandfather of Jake Albert Jordan and my 3x great-grandfather, and his first wife, Martha Jane "Dolly" Macon.

NOTE:  The majority of the family members listed here were born in Oklahoma and spent the majority of their lives there.  Oklahoma records are not easily accessible online; therefore, there are many holes in the documentation.  Perhaps over time a more complete record can be obtained through communication with the county clerk offices in Oklahoma.

John T. (J T) Jordan was the great-grandfather of Jake Albert Jordan and my 3x great-grandfather.  He was born in January 1851 to James S. Jourdan and Wincey Sarah Macon Jourdan of Hardeman County, Tennessee.  On 30 October 1869 J T married Martha Jane "Dolly" Macon.  They were farmers in Hardeman County and had three children:  J M (a son born in 1873; full name unknown), M E (a daughter born in 1878; full name unknown), and William Albert.  For more information about J T Jordan click here.

The Descendants of James S. Jourdan

This article describes the descendants of James S. Jourdan, 2x great-grandfather of Jake Albert Jordan, and my 5x great grandfather.

Recapped from a previous article:

James S Jourdan was born in approximately 1827 in North Carolina.  James married Wincey Sarah Macon on 6 January 1848 in Hardeman County, Tennessee.  (The Macon family has a well documented history and will be explored further in a later post.)  James, Wincey, and a young daughter named Sarah are listed on the 1850 Federal Census in Hardeman County.  James was a 23 year old farmer and lived on what appears to be land owned by the Macon family.

James and Wincey Jourdan had at least four children:
  1. Sarah, born abt 1849 in North Carolina
  2. John T, born abt 1851 in Hardeman County, Tennessee / died after 1920 in Texas
  3. M J (possibly Martha Jane), born abt 1854 in Hardeman County, Tennessee
  4. James P, born 8 April 1858 in Hardeman County, Tennessee / died 8 February 1945 in San Angelo, Texas
After 1850 there are no further records of James until a legal notice of estate proceedings following his death in 1867.  The notice was in the Bolivar Bulletin (Hardeman County, Tennessee) and lists Bailey Macon and Wincey Jourdan as being involved in the settling of the estate.  There are also multiple records showing Phillip Jourdan being released as the legal guardian for the heirs of J S Jourdan which is further proof that William Phillip was James' father.

Below are summaries of the children of James S. Jourdan.

The Descendants of William Phillip Jourdan

This article documents the earliest known relative of my branch of the Jourdan/Jordan family, William Phillip Jourdan, and his children.

NOTE:  It appears that the name "Jourdan" became "Jordan" during the mid 1800's.  This article lists names as they appear most often on documentation.

Beginning with Jake Albert Jordan (my grandfather) the Jordan family can be traced back without question to James S Jourdan of Hardeman County, Tennessee.  Many researchers on Ancestry.com list William Phillip Jourdan (born in about 1799 in North Carolina) as the father of James S Jourdan.  I have not found any documentation that specifically links William Philip and James S., but after doing my own research I agree that William Phillip Jourdan was most likely the father of James S. Jourdan.  Here are the facts as best I can present them:

  • The researchers show William Phillip as being married to a woman named Sarah (no maiden name is known).  The names appear to come from a listing on the US Find A Grave Index designating them as the parents of Jane Mariah Jordan Macon.
  • Jane was born in Wayne County, North Carolina and died in Hardeman County, Tennessee.
  • There is a Phillip Jourdan in Wayne County, North Carolina on the 1830 Federal Census.  Names of family members are not listed; there is only a tally of male/female and ages.  Phillip is listed as living with two females and a male with ages that correspond to the ages of Sarah, James S.,  and Jane.  He also had three slaves.
  • There is a Phillip Jourdan in Hardeman County, Tennessee on the 1840 Census.  Like the 1830 Census there are no names of family members; however, the ages of the family correspond with Sarah, James S., and Jane.  Also, three slaves are listed just like on the 1830 Census.
  • There is a Phillip Jordan in Hardeman County, Tennessee on the 1860 Federal Census.  He was born in North Carolina, was married to a Sarah, and was the correct age to be the the father of James S. and Jane.
  • Jane Mariah Jourdan and James S. Jourdan both married Macons.  There is a Macon-Jordan Cemetery in Hardeman County, Tennessee.

So...without further delay...here is what historical records tell us about William Phillip Jourdan and his children.
